Late Tolulope can no longer defend herself or even tell her own side of the story. The Igbo people in their colloquial dialect would always posit that ” It’s quite easy to tell lies against a dead body”.
The case of Tolulope is one of such cases, given the fact that she can no longer defend herself or discountenance the falsity in the Nigeria Air Force’s version of the story. That is an added reason all of us must come together and keep asking the probable questions until we get to the truth.
The story so far states in brief that, a civilian driver drove an SUV jeep into the air force base on a visit to a named resident. The driver had driven past Tolulope Arotile who was walking on the pavement at the time.
The driver stopped the jeep, applied the reverse gear and sped backward in order to GREET HER or probably in order to KILL HER: The strong question to be pushed further here is that of INTENT. At this point, the criminal law doctrine of MENS RAE should come to play to abstract the true picture from falsity (for lawyers).
What was the driver’s genuine intention? What was their relationship? How far had he driven past her before slamming the car on reverse gear?
For a reversing car to gather such a high speed that is capable of knocking down a pedestrian and running her over, and without her realizing that a reckless driver was coming behind – it must have been a flashy speed from a considerably long distance.
All drivers know that reversing cars have certain prominent squealing noise they make. With that noise you are most likely to look back for a second to see what’s coming. She didn’t do that. Was she ready to GREET HIM? And why is such a reckless speed necessary? To greet her? Some information is missing in that perimeter.
Until someone is charged to court for the death of Tolulope Arotile – we may not know the missing truth.
