ABIA – The Governor, Dr Alex Otti says his administration will continue to identify with relevant policies and programmes towards winning the war against drug and substance abuse.

Governor Otti stated this while declaring open the national Convention of the National Association of Nigeria Student Nurses and midwives held at the International Conference Center Umuahia.

The Governor described the choice of Abia for the national convention as appropriate as his administration has put in place various measures to curb incidences of drug and substance abuse among the youths.

The Governor represented by his Special Assistant on Students Affairs, Comrade Chinedu Nwosu described student nurses and midwives as crucial to the battle towards reducing drug and substance abuse among the youths across the nation.

The State Chief Executive noted that the state government through the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth development, has been visiting Communities and Schools sensitizing the Youth on the dangers of drug abuse, insisting that abstinence is key to a healthy and productive life.

In his speech, the President, National Association of Nigeria Student Nurses and Midwives, Obinna Ogbonna, said the convention is an annual event that brings student nurses and Midwives together to discuss issues affecting their profession and other issues affecting the society.

He thanked Governor Alex Otti for supporting the hosting of this year’s convention in the State, adding that the choice of the theme, “The Effects of Drug and Substance Use among the youths” is to educate the young people on the harmful effects of drug and substances abuse.

The convention was graced by student nurses and midwives from across the country.
