The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie lkpeazu has called on the three arms of Government to work in synergy and in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and agencies to ensure speedy dispensation of justice at all levels.
Dr Ikpeazu who made the call while declaring open the 2021 “Justice Reform TeamNetwork Meeting And National Justice Stakeholders Consultative Conference” put together by the Ministry Of Justice in conjunction with the Prisoners Rehabilitation And Welfare Action(PRAWA) held at Micheal Okpara Auditorium lamented a situation whereby justice is staled at the expense of other parties involved in a case due to the absence of either the plaintiff, defendant, judge or even other judiciary staff and urged the judiciary to show greater concern and commitment to quicken dispensation of justice.
The Governor represented by his Deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu stressed the need for reforms that will guarantee effectiveness and transparency in justice administration while the Judiciary in the country need a comprehensive reform and retooling in line with best practices for optimal performance for the good of the common man adding that virtual Trials should be adopted as part of the Judicial innovation in Justice administration in the light of trendig global technology.
The State Chief Executive lauded the Prisoners Rehabilitation And Welfare Action ,(PRAWA), an NGO led by Dr Uju Agonmo for promoting Human Rights for people in prison and helping those that have survived prison to be successfully integrated into the community and believing in the importance of an effective justice system that supports rehabilitation to offenders, victims and the community.
The Governor stressed his administrations determination to doing everything within its power to provide the necessary support and environment for the state Judiciary and it’s partner to discharge their functions and obligations effectively for the common good and expressed confidence that the Summit will go a long way in encouraging innovations and facilitate collaboration across the sector on how to improve the judiciary through institutional reforms promotion among others.
In his remarks, the Solicitor General of the Federation and Chairman, Federal Justice Sector Reform Coordinating Committee, Justice Dayo Apata represented by the Secretary, Justice Felix Ota-Okojie commended the determination of the various teams to drive the Justice reforms in their various States Judiciary despite the challenges of the COVID 19 pandemic and prayed for a useful deliberation that will advance Justice delivery in the country.
In their speeches, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Chief Uche Ihediwa and the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Onuoha Arisa Ogwe said the Abia State Administration of Justice Criminal Monitoring Committee is very much on ground in the State having carried out a number of activities aimed at repositioning the Justice Sector for effectiveness and efficient justice delivery in the society in pursuit of its mandate under the law establishing it and promised to do their best to ensure that Justice delivery takes a pride of place in the society.
The event which featured the commissioning of the Abia State E- Court at the High Court Complex by the governor’s representative Sir Ude Oko Chukwu attracted the presence of the Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi, the SSG, Mr Chris Ezem, the State controller General, Nigerian Correctional Service, top Govt Officials and legal luminaries.
