Anambra Govt Bans Scavengers, Threatens Legal Action Against Scrap Sellers
Anambra State has enacted an immediate prohibition on scavengers engaged in the collection of iron scraps, simply known as “iron condemn.”
This action follows the widespread disruption caused by scavengers, who have been involved in stealing metal from public utilities, private properties, and vandalizing essential infrastructure.
In a statement endorsed by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr Paul Nwosu, disclosed that these scavengers’ activities are harming the state’s economy and have broader national implications.
He explained that government has issued a stern warning that anyone caught conducting business with scavengers in the state will be arrested and charged for handling stolen goods.
According to him, in other to differentiate between illicit scavengers and legitimate scrap metal dealers, the Ministry of Environment will implement a registration and certification process for the latter, ensuring their continued operation under legal terms.
The OCHA and SASA brigades have been assigned to enforce the ban and apprehend any unauthorized scavengers operating in the state.
He further encouraged residents to report scavenger activities to authorities for swift intervention.
“This decision marks a crucial move toward upholding public order and safeguarding both public and private property from theft and vandalism.”
