The threat of a national grid shutdown escalates as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) places its members on standby for a possible strike following the arrest of Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), by the Department of State Services (DSS).

This development was revealed in a statement by Acting General Secretary Igwebike Dominic on Monday.

The arrest of Ajaero, which took place on Monday, prompted a swift response from NUEE, demanding his immediate and safe release.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us, and our leaders should not treat us as though we are voiceless in our own nation.

“We call for the unconditional release of Comrade Joe Ajaero without harm. We are also instructing all our members to remain on alert for further instructions,” the statement read.

According to DAILY POST, Ajaero was arrested by the DSS at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while en route to the Trade Union Congress (TUC) UK conference on Monday.

The NLC had earlier issued a warning to its affiliate unions, signaling a potential nationwide strike and protests if Ajaero is not freed.
