Abia Govt Unveils Comprehensive Plan For Reliable, Clean Power
Abia State government says it is poised to utilize the available renewable energy sources in the state to give Abians and residents unhindered access to electricity.
The state Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday stated this at the Off Grid Energy Stakeholders Workshop on Abia State Off-Grid Regulations Framework organized in Umuahia.
Engr. Monday explained that the stakeholders’ engagement which involves personnel from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the State was aimed at making energy available at an international standard.
He disclosed that the Ministry has the mandate to support Governor Alex Otti to fulfill his promise of utilizing available renewable energy sources within the state to provide access to electricity for all.
According to him, following the Electricity Act of 2023 which removed electricity from the exclusive list and gave States the leverage to regulate their own electricity, the state government is working towards an electricity law which covers both Generation, Transmission and Distribution.
The Commissioner further hinted that the facilitators were drawn from India and Germany to actualize the project, adding that the consultants are those that had worked with the federal government on the rural electrification agency at the federal level, and revealed that Abia is one of the first states to take the initiative.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Mr Kachi Etolue explained that the selected stakeholders were part of efforts to position Abia state to be among states that have developed their upgrade energy’s sector into actualizing the dream of Governor Alex Otti of providing clean renewable and affordable energy.
