Pensioners in Abia State have been assured that the State government will address the issue of deductions in their pensions noticed recently.
The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. A.C.B Agbazuere who gave the assurance when he received in audience a delegation of Association of State
Retired Permanent Secretaries of Nigeria, Abia State chapter disclosed that Governor Ikpeazu is committed to doing the right thing even as he would soon meet with the labour leaders in the State over the matter.
Dr Agbazuere noted that the State government is aware of their plights and is determined to do justice to the issue of pensions but however advised them to also prepare their minds considering the state of the economy, also urged them not to border but remain calm assuring that any deduction in their pensions would be given a human face.
The Chief of Staff further disclosed that as a former labour leader in the state, he is aware that their should be consultantations with the labour before deductions are made and commended the retired Permanent Secretaries for their maturity and commitments.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman, Association of State Retired Permanent Secretaries of Nigeria, Abia State chapter, Sir Allan Okpokiri said their visit was to inform the Chief of Staff of the slashings in their pensions since May this year without consultantations, adding that as a Labour leader of note, they believe he would use his good office to address the issue.
Sir Okpokiri appealed to the state government to be more considerate in cutting their pensions considering what they have gone through in the past disclosing that with the coming on board of Dr. Aham Uko as the Commissioner for Finance, they have been receiving their pensions since January this year.
He congratulated the Governor on his recovery from the Covid-19 disease and the Chief of Staff on his appointment by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, describing the appointment as well deserved.
