A five man Committee on the relocation of the Abattoir at Waterside, Ogbor Hill, Aba, the commercial nerve center of Abia State has been inaugurated.
Performing the inauguration ceremony at the Government house, Umuahia, the state Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu represented by his deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu charged the committee to ensure the immediate relocation of the Abattoir and cattle rearers to avoid further degradation of environment and threat to public health.
Dr lkpeazu disclosed that the relocation has become necessary following Governments desire to maintain a health friendly environment as the present location of the Abattoir has over the years posed serious health hazards to Aba residents as well as creating traffic congestion in the area and it’s environs.
The Governor gave members of the committee which has the Commissioner for Trade and lnvestment, Dr Cosmos Ndukwe as its Chairman two months to deliver and report back to Government in line with laid down directives and expressed confidence in their ability to do a thorough job.
Responding on behalf of other members of the committee, the Chairman and Commissioner for Trade and investment, Dr Cosmos Ndukwe thanked the State Government for finding them worthy to serve and assured that they will do their best to find a suitable location for standard Abattoir that is both healthy and environmentally friendly that will be acceptable to all.
Other members of the Committee include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment,Mr lheanyi Ubani who will serve as the Secretary, lzuchi Nwosu, Chiazo Cyril Chukwuowo and Okechukwu Ndukwe.
Crystal News Correspondent reports that the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Chris Ezem, Commissioner for Health, Dr Joe Osuji and other Government officials were present during the inauguration.
