Dr Ikpeazu who stated this during the 2020 World Teachers Day held at the Abia Teachers House, Ogurube Layout in Umuahia North L.G.A disclosed that the covid-19 pandemic challenges already constrained education systems in various new ways resulting in a revision of how teachers teach and more generally works.
The Governor represented by his Chief of Staff, Associate professor A.C.B Agbazuere noted that the issue of teacher leadership in relation to crisis responses is not just timely but critical in terms of the contributions teachers have recently made in providing remote learning, supporting vulnerable populations, reopening schools, ensuring that learning gaps in the curriculum are being mitigated among others pointed out that no other profession deserves the highest form of gratitude and appreciation than teaching.
The State Chief Executive while describing the theme of this years World Teachers Day, ” TEACHERS: LEADING IN CRISIS, REIMAGINING THE FUTURE”, noted that the chosen theme also considers the role of teachers in building resilience and shaping the future of education and the teaching profession.
In his speech, the Commissioner for Education, Associate professor Kaenelechi Nwangwa disclosed that it is a thing of joy to gather to celebrate teachers across the world for their passion and unrelentless efforts towards shaping and equipping students and pupils with the requite knowledge needed for them to excel in life urged them to sustain the tempo.
Earlier in his address, the state Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Elder Kizito Kalu said the World Teachers Day which is observed every 5th of October since 1994 is set aside to commemorate the anniversary of adoption of 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers adding that the recommendations sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment and teaching and learning conditions.
Crystal News Correspondent Ugochukwu Ahuchogu reports that the event which attracted the presence of the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir Gabriel Onyendilefu, ASUBEB Chairman, traditional rulers featured the selection of three teachers drawn from the three educational zones in the state who won brand new cars through open balloting courtesy of Governor Ikpeazu as part of measures of encouraging and empowering teachers across the state.
