NECO: Abia Ranks First, Katsina Last in 2024 SSCE
The National Examination Council (NECO) has unveiled the results for the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), revealing that 828,284 candidates, or 60.55%, achieved five credits, including Mathematics and English Language.
NECO Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Dantana Wushishi disclosed these while releasing the results to the media at the Council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday.
Wushishi reported that 1,147,597 candidates obtained five credits or more, regardless of English Language and Mathematics, representing 83.90% of those who sat for the exam.
Of the 1,376,423 registered candidates, 1,367,736 participated, including 702,112 males and 665,624 females.
Wushishi noted a decline in examination malpractice, with 8,437 candidates involved in 2024, down from 12,030 in 2023, marking a 30.1% reduction.
A total of 2,267 candidates with special needs participated, including 1,104 with hearing impairment, 348 with visual impairment, 342 with albinism, 237 with autism, and 236 with low vision.
During the 2024 SSCE, 40 schools in 17 states were implicated in mass cheating, and 21 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to various infractions, including negligence and aiding malpractice.
Notably, one school in Ekiti State was proposed for de-recognition for serious cheating violations.
Abia State topped the performance chart, with 83.40% of its candidates achieving five credits, while Katsina State ranked lowest at just 2.42%.
Abia also led in overall credit achievement, with 95.84% of candidates scoring five credits or more, regardless of subject criteria.
Conversely, Katsina’s performance with five credits including Mathematics and English was the lowest at 42.00%, closely followed by Kano at 44.42%.
