Seven members of a family in Egba, Agatu Local Government Area, Benue State, have been hospitalized after consuming pap, a fermented corn beverage locally known as “Akamu.”

The affected individuals include Amina Isah, a widow, her four children, and two grandchildren.

Reports indicate they began vomiting after drinking the pap and were swiftly taken to Gana Clinic, a private healthcare facility in the area.

Dr. Oyaje Sule, the clinic’s owner, confirmed that three of the patients, including the widow, were admitted in a state of unconsciousness. He explained that the family inadvertently used guinea corn mixed with planting chemicals to prepare the pap. After planting the treated guinea corn, the remaining was used to make the beverage.

Dr. Sule revealed that the victims, ranging in age from three to thirty, were critically ill upon arrival but have since been stabilized. He stressed that the family’s condition was exacerbated by their use of contaminated ingredients.

The victims, including Benjamin, Piko, Esther, Hassan Emmanuel, and one other, are now receiving treatment.
