Gov Otti Tasks MAN On Reawakening And Sustaining Interest In Mathematical Sciences
Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has charged the Mathematical Association of Nigeria MAN to develop more initiatives of international standard that will help in reawakening and sustaining interest in mathematical sciences.
Governor Otti who gave the charge at Government House Umuahia when a delegation from the state chapter of MAN led by the Chairman, Dr Nnenna Kalu Uka paid him a courtesy visit, stressed the need to strengthen the resolve of students to love mathematics.
The Governor represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba while describing mathematics, its applications and roles as boundless, underscored the importance his administration is giving to the educational system in the state and its academic curricular towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics STEM.
The State Chief Executive further commended the leadership of the association in the state for providing a veritable platform for training, learning and research in Mathematical sciences and their applications and promised to partner them in their programs.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Dr Kenechukwu Nwosu enumerated numerous ongoing reforms in the educational sector, adding that the present administration in the state is committed to producing children that are good in critical thinking, cognitive development, logical reasoning, problem solving ability, flexible thinking and creativity.
In her address, the state Chairman, Mathematical Association of Nigeria MAN, Dr Nnenna Kalu Uka, said the objectives of the association is to encourage and stimulate mathematical thoughts and activities, promote effective teaching and learning of mathematics within and outside the state, sensitize students and parents on the importance of mathematics in real life application, carry out campaigns on ways to eradicate the phobia the society has for mathematics, raise the bar on performance of Abia students in both internal and external examinations among others.
Dr Uka while applauding Governor Alex Otti for his giant strides across the state and for awarding scholarship to one of their mathematics Olympiad contestants, Miss Sam Praise after their conference in Edo State, solicited governments support to enable them organize workshops and seminars for teachers, students and stakeholders on best practices in teaching and learning of mathematics in the state among others.
In a vote of thanks, the state secretary of MAN, Dr Sussan Ezeh thanked the Governor for the ongoing reforms in the educational sector and promised they will continue to partner with government to enable them achieve their core objectives.
